2006 "Shining STAR" Scholarships

 

PURPOSE & GOAL:

 

The Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse, Inc. [a Florida 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization] is committed to recognizing individual high school students in Sarasota County, Florida, who have distinguished themselves as students through their school and community involvement, citizenship and academic success.  To this end we will annually award scholarships to graduating high school seniors with plans to continue their education.  These scholarships, which are available to graduating high school seniors, are awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Academic performance

  • School and Community involvement

  • Exemplary citizenship/mentoring

  • Ability to remain substance [alcohol/drugs] free

  • Personal statement of applicant


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

 

Any student enrolled in a Sarasota County school who at the time of application, is in twelfth grade.  Twelfth grade scholarship winners receive an award of $1,000.00.  These monies will go directly to the student's educational institution of choice to help defray expenses of tuition and textbooks.

 


APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
 

Applicants will only be considered if ALL information and attachments are included.

  • Every section of the application must be complete and typed or printed neatly in black ink.

  • Two letters of recommendation must be attached [1 - school & 1 - community].

  • An up-to-date copy of the student's high school transcript must be attached.

  • The student's Personal Statement is a very critical section in the application; quality more than quantity is valued by the judges.

The entire packet must be postmarked no later than February 10, 2006.  Please send all completed application packets to:

  • All winning applicants will be notified by mail of the results as soon as possible.

  • If you want confirmation that we have received your application, please mail it certified, return receipt requested.
