FACTS

ADULTS

  • In Sarasota County during 2003, there were 1,932 drug arrests, 1,038 DUIs, and 493 alcohol-related arrests [Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Florida Department of Highway Safety].

  • In 2002, Sarasota County's annual alcohol sale per capita was $210, compared to $144 for the state [Florida Department of Revenue].

  • These industries have the highest ranking in illicit drug use: food preparation, service industry, vehicle repair, light truck driving, and construction [2002 - National Institute on Drug Abuse].

  • We must increase protective factors [positive bonding with family, friends, work, and community, opportunities and recognition for social involvement, and healthy beliefs and clear standards] to help reduce these numbers.

TEENS

  • 7% of middle school students and 24% of high school students reported marijuana use within 30 days before the survey.

  • Sarasota County rated the #1 county for Oxycontin® [a time-released morphine] abuse by youth.

  • Within 30 days prior to the survey, 2% of middle school students and 5% of high school students reported misuse/abuse of prescription drugs.

  • We must increase protective factors [positive bonding with family, friends, work, and community, opportunities and recognition for social involvement, and healthy beliefs and clear standards] to help reduce these numbers.
