COST OF DRUG USE IN SARASOTA COUNTY TO BE DISCUSSED AT PUBLIC FORUM

The Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse (SCoSA) will host a special forum on Friday, June 24^th, 2005 at 8:30am to address both the cost of substance abuse to the workplace, as well as recognize four organizations for their participation in the SAFE Workplace Program.

The four organizations being recognized are:

·        Sarasota Family YMCA  (non-profit category)

·        Gold Coast Eagle Distributing (for-profit category)

·        Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (governmental category)

·        Sarasota Military Academy (educational institution)

“The community as a whole needs to applaud these organizations for their willingness to step up to the plate on an issue that is impacting our community tremendously,” states Curt Lavarello, the Coalition’s Executive Director.

Also speaking at the forum will be Jack Swanton, a drug-free specialist in Sarasota and Dr. Christine Cauffield, CEO of Coastal Behavioral Healthcare, who also sits of the Board of Directors for the Coalition on Substance Abuse.  Dr. Cauffield will speak about the 1987 Drug Free Workplace Act, which she was very instrumental in drafting during President Reagan’s Administration.

Sarasota High School Teacher Vanessa Sanchez will address the issue of drugs in our schools and the impact that drugs have in the classroom.
