The Sarasota Family YMCA, Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, Sarasota County Sheriff's Office and the Sarasota Military Academy were recently recognized for their participating in the SAFE Workplace Program.

The Substance Abuse Free Environments was launched by the Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse to educate the community about the issue.

The four organizations - representing nonprofits, for-profits, government and education - have developed policies such as drug screenings or random drug testing.

"The best step forward to reduce the drug problem is for the adults to set the bar by applying proper policy," said Curt Lavarello, the coalition's executive director.

"The community as a whole needs to applaud these organizations for their willingness to step up to the plate on an issue that is impacting our community tremendously," he added.

Lavarello said the coalition plans to recognize others during forums it will hold throughout the year.
