PRESS RELEASE
December 13, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BESTSELLING
AUTHOR AND NEWS JOURNALIST
Sarasota, FL// Bestselling author and news journalist William Cope Moyers will speak in Sarasota on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 as part of the second annual “Sarasota Shining Stars” recognition lunch. The event will be held at the Meadows Country Club and Mr. Moyers will be the keynote speaker during the event.
William Cope Moyers, a noted journalist and CNN reporter, will address the audience about the many faces of addiction on a community like Sarasota. Mr. Moyers will speak from experience as he, the son of legendary newsman Bill Moyers, tells of his upbringing among the rich and famous and his plunge into alcoholism and addiction to crack cocaine in “Broken: My Story of Addiction and Redemption”. Moyers was an award-winning journalist for 15 years. He has worked at CNN, Newsday and various other newspapers around the country. In 1981, Moyers received his BA degree in journalism from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA.
He has appeared on Larry King Live, the Oprah Winfrey show, and the Today show, and his work has been featured in the New York Times and Newsweek magazine.
“It’s hard to come off as a regular guy when your father was right-hand man to a President and still is a nationally renowned journalist and an icon of the liberal political establishment”, the Times book review noted. “But Moyers, who now goes by ‘William’ after years of being called ‘Cope’ and decades of seeing himself almost exclusively as Bill Moyers son, pulls it off, letting the reader see him as one of the million of Americans who have overcome addiction… Moyers shows the deceit, the games, the illogical and distorted thinking that fill up the day of someone whose only concern is getting high”.
The event is sponsored by the Sarasota Coalition on Substance Abuse, and the organization will also recognize several area businesses for their part in the Drug-Free Workplace legislation, as well as name its citizen of the year. The coalition funded a study in 2001 which indicated that the cost of substance abuse to the Sarasota County community is in excess of $200 million dollars a year. “We hope the community will understand just how serious our problem is here in Sarasota”, stated Curt Lavarello, the organizations Executive Director.
